Guide
Invisalign: should you see an orthodontist or a general dentist?
Many dental offices now offer clear aligners. Here is what a specialist adds, so you can choose with confidence.
From the orthodontists at NA Orthodontics
Specialist training
After dental school, orthodontists complete two to three more years of full-time residency devoted to moving teeth and guiding jaws. Every case we treat is orthodontics, every day.
Academic leadership
Dr. Jessica Greenberg serves as Clinical Associate Faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, teaching orthodontic residents. That same standard guides every treatment plan in our office.
We plan the whole bite, not just the front teeth
Straightening front teeth without considering the bite can lead to uneven wear and relapse. Our orthodontists plan how your upper and lower teeth fit together, so results look good and last.
The aligners are a tool. The plan is the treatment.
Invisalign software proposes tooth movements, but the doctor decides them. Our orthodontists review and adjust every movement on your iTero 3D scan, and use attachments and IPR only where they help.
We tell you if braces are better
We offer both Invisalign and braces, so we can recommend what fits your bite instead of one option for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
- All orthodontists are dentists, but only about 6% of dentists are orthodontists. After dental school, orthodontists complete an additional two to three year full-time residency focused on tooth movement and jaw alignment.
- Is Invisalign from an orthodontist more expensive?
- Not necessarily. Fees depend on your treatment plan. We review costs, insurance and payment options with you at your consultation.
- Can I switch to an orthodontist if my aligners are not working?
- Yes. Our orthodontists can evaluate your teeth and bite and explain your options.
Consultations are free for patients under 18. Adult consultations are $90, credited toward treatment.
