Orthodontic wax for braces and Invisalign
A little wax goes a long way when a bracket, wire or aligner edge feels sore. Here is how to use it.
From the team at NA Orthodontics, North Arlington, NJ
What orthodontic wax does
Wax forms a smooth, soft cover over a bracket, wire end or aligner attachment so it stops rubbing your cheeks, lips or tongue. It is most helpful in the first week of braces or a new set of aligners.
How to put it on
- Wash your hands and brush the area.
- Dry the bracket or spot with a tissue so the wax sticks.
- Pinch off a piece about the size of a pea.
- Roll it into a ball for a few seconds to warm it.
- Press it gently over the spot that is bothering you.
Using wax with Invisalign
Most aligner soreness fades in a few days. If an edge or attachment irritates your cheek, place wax on the aligner or attachment. If an edge stays sharp, call us. We can smooth it.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I use orthodontic wax with Invisalign?
- Yes. If an aligner edge or attachment rubs your cheek or tongue, a small piece of wax over the spot can help while your mouth adjusts. Remove the wax before cleaning your aligners.
- Is it okay to swallow orthodontic wax?
- Orthodontic wax is non-toxic, so swallowing a small piece by accident is not harmful. Replace it with a fresh piece.
- How long can I leave wax on my braces?
- Replace it at least daily, and take it off before brushing. Put on a fresh piece afterward if you still need it.
- What if a wire is poking me?
- Cover it with wax and call our office. A poking wire usually needs a quick adjustment.
