IPR
Interproximal reduction: a precise, gentle way to create space and reshape teeth.
Strategic IPR helps reduce black triangles, refine tooth shape and fine-tune your bite.
What is IPR?
Interproximal reduction (IPR) — also called tooth slenderizing, stripping or enamel reduction — is a precise orthodontic technique where a fraction of a millimeter of enamel is smoothed between teeth to reshape them and/or create just enough space for alignment. We use ultra-fine polishing strips or a handpiece to make tiny, carefully planned adjustments that improve alignment and esthetics.

Why we use IPR
IPR has several uses; we focus on where it adds the most benefit. Black-triangle reduction is the main reason we perform IPR.
- Reduces black triangles between teeth
- Improves esthetics by refining tooth shape and proportions
- Supports gum and bone health by reducing plaque and food traps
- Creates space without extractions in severe crowding (used sparingly — expansion and bite correction usually create the space needed)
- Refines the bite during Invisalign® or braces when tooth proportions are mismatched
Common myths answered
- “IPR needs to be done.” We never insist on it and only recommend IPR if it benefits your smile, bite or gum health.
- “IPR weakens teeth.” Within safe limits, enamel remains strong and cavity-resistant.
- “It’s shaving teeth down.” No. IPR is done between the teeth, not on top. Teeth do not get shorter.
- “It causes cavities.” Smooth, polished contacts are not more cavity-prone with normal brushing and flossing.
Who’s a good candidate?
- Black triangles between teeth
- Triangular or mismatched tooth shapes
- Crowding that doesn’t require extractions
- Bite discrepancies that align better with small enamel adjustments
3D IPR planning — a case example
IPR planning begins with a 3D digital scan. These images show how we virtually measure and simulate exactly how much enamel (in this case 0.2 mm) will be gently polished between the teeth, so IPR is precise, safe and customized before any procedure is performed.

Why choose NA Orthodontics for IPR
We treat IPR as a precision tool, never a routine — we call it strategic IPR.
- Expert clinicians: Dr. Greenberg (Clinical Associate Faculty, University of Pennsylvania) and our team plan IPR with 3D digital imaging and precise measuring tools.
- Esthetics focus: straight teeth look best when shaped and proportioned correctly.
- Convenience: most IPR takes only a few minutes during your regular visits.
- Two locations — North Arlington and Jersey City — serving Bergen, Hudson and Essex Counties.
Frequently asked questions
- Is IPR safe?
- Yes. Our orthodontists are conservative with IPR and stay well within biologically safe enamel ranges. Surfaces are polished so teeth stay smooth and easy to clean.
- How much enamel is removed?
- Typically 0.1–1 mm per contact — about the thickness of a business card. The exact amount depends on tooth shape and enamel thickness.
- Does IPR hurt?
- Most patients feel little to no discomfort. Anesthesia is not needed and sensitivity is rare.
- Will IPR change how my teeth look?
- Yes, in a positive way. Tiny adjustments can reduce black triangles and improve tooth proportions.
- Can IPR fix black triangles?
- Often, yes. Reshaping contact points encourages gum tissue to fill spaces naturally.
- Is special maintenance required?
- No. With normal brushing, flossing and dental checkups, teeth remain strong and healthy.
