Rubber bands for braces: how to wear them
Rubber bands (elastics) help line up your bite. Wearing them as directed keeps treatment on schedule.
From the team at NA Orthodontics, North Arlington, NJ
What rubber bands do
Elastics connect hooks on your upper and lower braces. The gentle pull moves your jaws and teeth into a better bite. Different patterns help with overbites, underbites and open bites. Learn more in our bite types guide.
How to put them on
- Wash your hands.
- Hook one end of the band on the upper hook we showed you.
- Stretch it down to the lower hook, using a finger or the hook tool.
- Check in a mirror that it matches the pattern we gave you.
- Repeat on the other side if you wear bands on both sides.
Tips for success
- Keep a pack of bands in your backpack, car and bedroom.
- Change to fresh bands after every meal.
- Wear them every day. Skipping days slows progress and brings soreness back.

Frequently asked questions
- How many hours a day should I wear rubber bands?
- Usually all day and night, taking them out only to eat and brush, unless your orthodontist gives you different instructions. Follow the plan we give you.
- How often should I change my rubber bands?
- Put in fresh bands at least a few times a day, such as after each meal. Bands lose stretch over time.
- Do rubber bands hurt?
- Teeth can feel sore for the first few days. That is normal and usually fades. Keep wearing them every day so soreness does not restart.
- What if I run out or a hook breaks?
- Call our office. We can get you more bands or fix the hook. Do not skip days while you wait if you can avoid it.
