Braces colors: how to choose your combo
Picking colors is the fun part of braces. Here is how to choose shades you will love until your next visit.
From the team at NA Orthodontics, North Arlington, NJ
Start with what you love
Favorite colors, school colors and sports team colors are the most popular picks. Since colors can change at each adjustment, there is no wrong choice. Try something new next time.
Popular combinations
- School spirit: match your school or team colors.
- Ocean: teal, navy and light blue.
- Galaxy: purple, navy and black.
- Rainbow: alternate a different color on every tooth.
- Simple and subtle: silver, gray or clear.
Seasonal and holiday ideas
- Fall and Halloween: orange and black.
- Winter holidays: red and green, or blue and white.
- Valentine's Day: red and pink.
- Fourth of July: red, white and blue.
- Summer: bright neon shades.
Colors that make teeth look whiter
Darker or deeper colors, like navy, purple, dark green and gray, contrast with teeth and make them look brighter. Light colors like white, yellow or light green can make teeth look less white, especially after coffee, tea or curry.
Keep your colors looking fresh
Brush after meals and limit foods that stain, like tomato sauce, berries and dark sodas. Our Life with Braces guide lists the tools and foods we recommend.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I change my braces colors at every visit?
- Yes. With metal braces, you can pick new colors at your adjustment visits. Our team will show you the options.
- Which colors make teeth look whiter?
- Darker shades like navy, purple, dark green and gray tend to make teeth look brighter. Very light colors like white or yellow can make teeth look less white.
- Do clear braces come in colors?
- Clear braces are designed to blend in, so most patients choose clear or tooth-colored ties. Ask us what works with your brackets.
- Do self-ligating braces use colored ties?
- Self-ligating brackets hold the wire with a built-in clip, so they do not need elastic ties. Colors can still be added on many brackets. Ask at your visit.
Consultations are free for patients under 18. Adult consultations are $90, credited toward treatment.
